Crazy World Tour
Place Bell is a new venue located in Laval, a city just north of Montreal, Canada. The $200 million, 10,000 seat venue was built to house the new American Hockey League team, the Laval Rocket, the minor league team for the Montreal Canadiens. On September 19th, 2017 the first ever event was held at this state-of-the-art venue and what better show than thrash metal pioneers Megadeth with a band that Rolling Stone magazine called “the heroes of heavy metal”, Scorpions.
I was extremely happy to find out that I wouldn’t have to sit through some band I’ve never heard of for the opener of this show. Megadeth followed by Scorpions with no filler needed! I had seen Megadeth once before at the Heavy Montreal festival so I knew I was going to get a great show from Dave and the boys. They did a 9 song set, which included all their hits, from Sweating Bullets to Peace Sells to Hangar 18 and more! The band’s mascot, Vic Rattlehead received a warm reception from the crowd during Peace Sells. Megadeth’s current lineup includes David Ellefson on bass and backing vocals, Kiko Loureiro on guitar and back vocals, Dirk Vanbeuren on drums and of course, Dave Mustaine on guitar and lead vocals. I truly feel Megadeth’s live show is what has kept the band going for almost 35 years. Even though the band’s lineup has changed over the years, Dave has found suitable replacements to keep their signature sound and live shows at a high level. After seeing them live, you’ll fully understand why Megadeth is one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal!
You’ve been living under a rock if you’ve never heard a song by the legendary German heavy metal band, Scorpions. The band’s setlist consisted of 14 songs and 3 for an encore. With hits Rock You Like a Hurricane, Still Loving You, No One Like You, Send Me an Angel and possibly their biggest to date, Wind of Change, there’s no way you couldn’t recognize at least one of their hits. Like Megadeth, this band has seen many lineup changes but has three consistent members and that’s lead singer Klaus Meine, guitarist Rudolf Schenker and guitarist Matthias Jabs (since 1979). Scorpions is another band who’s been able to succeed all these year’s due to their amazing live shows! They sound great, Meine brings showmanship, and are amazing entertainers. Not only that but the entire band seems to still love taking the stage after all these years. Schenker has a big smile on his face from the start of the show to end of the encore! Oh and did I mention as of April of 2016, the band’s drummer is Mikkey Dee, who is best known for his time with legendary Motörhead. This band is a must see so do not pass up the opportunity when they come to a city near you!
A great venue, opened by two legendary bands, does it get any better than that? I think not. This was a show I had high expectations for and they were exceeded. I’m really looking forward to the next time I can catch either of these bands in concert!
