Porn Stars: Just Failed Mainstream Entertainment Industry Wannabes?

What percentage of the adult film industry do you think is made up of people who failed to be successful in the mainstream entertainment industry as actors/directors/writers?

Allison,

I would venture to say, not many. Most of the adult performers entering the industry are very young (18-22). That’s hardly an age at which one would consider themselves a failure at anything. Also, what exactly do you define as ‘failure’?

As a writer and director in adult, I don’t consider my time in mainstream a failure by any sense of the word (even though I do joke about it from time to time). For me, the path to adult was more out of necessity for a creative outlet. There’s a lot of red tape in mainstream. I grew frustrated quickly and was looking to find other avenues to express myself creatively. I did some work and I got paid extremely well when I did work, but it was not steady and the opportunities weren’t flying at me. I’m not exactly the most patient person in the world. I have actor friends that struggled for 10-20 years and are just now hitting their stride.

Within my first year in adult, I worked as a feature film writer, director, production manager, script supervisor, PA, acting coach, editor, wardrobe consultant, etc. In mainstream, the path to becoming a director on any MAJOR production seldom EVER happens so quickly (if ever). I’d like to think that the experience I’ve gained in just two years in adult will open more doors for me in the future both inside and outside the industry.

Mainstream entertainment is an extremely rough road to travel on and most people don’t fail at it, they simply give up. There’s a difference.

There is a wealth of talent among people working in adult, and whether they failed in mainstream or were born and raised in adult, they are successes to me. Some of those people worth noting are: Eli Cross, Eddie Powell, Raven Touchstone, Steven St. Croix, Axel Braun, Bobbi Starr, Erika Lust, Chauntelle Tibbals, Tristan Taormino, Remy LaCroix, India Summer, Jules Jordan, John Stagliano, Mason, Graham Travis, Jessica Drake, Stormy Daniels, Belladonna and Joanna Angel (to name a few).

I’m glad you asked this question.
